One thing many people don’t realize is that running a single 18 inch sub can actually save space! Yes, an 18 requires LOTS of airspace (4 cubic feet sealed for this one). But because that box can fairly cubical rather than rectangular (as would be the case for two 12s or even two 10s), you get that airspace with a fairly small footprint. For instance, a box that is 21.5x21.5x18.75 inches made from 3/4 inch MDF or birch plywood will get you there. A box with two 12s is going to be much longer and not a great deal narrower.
